Well-know Cork busker Dylan Brickley has made a name for himself on Leeside in recent years.

Leeside busking to be cranked down?

Busking on Leeside may soon come under a new set of by-laws, the Cork Independent can reveal.

Cork City Council has confirmed it is already in the process of reviewing current regulations for busking.

A spokesperson said: “Cork City Council is presently reviewing options for the management of busking in the city and the adoption of new by-laws is one option being considered.

“It is expected that this review will take a number of months to be completed.”

The news follows the introduction of new busking by-laws in Killarney, county Kerry last week.

The new laws will limit buskers to 2 hours of playing time at any one spot between 11am and 9pm. Coming into force on 1 June, the laws will also set a volume limit for performers while banning any bad language.

Performers will also need a suitably varied list of songs in order to avoid repetition and are discourage from drawing large crowds that might block walkways.

Meanwhile, one of Cork city’s best-known buskers has told the Cork Independent that he feels busking is here to stay despite less and less people carrying cash these days.

Dylan Brickley, 30, has been busking on the streets of Cork since he was 18 and says these days most buskers are doing it for the love of performing while trying to make a name for themselves as musicians.

“It has changed alright. You'd be busking now sometimes, and people would say, 'We really enjoyed it but we have no cash on us’,” Dylan told the Cork Independent.

He continued: “I don't really mind that because I'm not relying on it. I think a lot of people out there at the moment are there for the love of it and to try and get a lucky break.”

In recent years, Dylan has become one of the most recognised buskers in Cork and has amassed a considerable fanbase, playing a mix of cover songs and his own material. Several of his videos have clocked up hundreds of thousands of views between them on TikTok and other social media.

“It's definitely the best thing to do to try to get your name out there and try and get a break or get spotted,” he said.

Dylan will release his first single ‘Close To You’ on 15 April on Spotify, iTunes and other major platforms. The song is available now for pre-save on Spotify.

“It's about going through change in your life, it could be a relationship or a friendship, it's about the loss of someone in your life basically,” explained Dylan.

“When I went into the studio the producer added a good beat to the song, he added a bit of keys on it, brought a bit of life to it. We kind of changed it around then a bit, we changed the key of the singing from the busking version, it's much higher now and there's a fierce strong chorus in it,” he added.
