Dylan me softly with his song!
Last week, Cork singer/songwriter Dylan Brickley stated his ambition to hit number 1 on the Irish iTunes chart with his debut single, and he’s only gone and done it!
His song, ‘Close To You’, went live last Saturday and shot straight to the top of the pile, rising above the likes of Miley Cyrus and Lewis Capaldi.
Dylan has been busking in Cork for over a decade and in that time has amassed a large and loyal following, playing a mix of covers and his own tunes.
“Having a debut single reaching number 1 on iTunes really shocked me and I wasn’t expecting it to be honest,” Dylan told the Cork Independent.
“It’s such a big deal to get to the top of the charts when you’re up against artists who have a record label and management behind them, it’s really hard for an independent artist to reach the top.”
Last Friday, on the eve of the song’s official release, Dylan was performing at a charity gig in Cork for Cystic Fibrosis Ireland. After the gig he headed out for a few drinks with friends, keeping one eye on the charts as his midnight release neared.
“When I woke Saturday morning my phone was going mad. People from all over the world were sharing my song and it was like there was an army behind it. I was in shock. I checked the iTunes Charts and my single had reached the number one spot. I was jumping around the house for a good 10 minutes,” said Dylan.
He added: “I went busking that day and people gathered on Patrick Street while I sang a few songs and they were singing my lyrics back to me!”
Dylan says he’s only getting started and is already working on his next release as he shifts his focus to creating new original material, with more live gigs on the horizon.
He said: “I’m back in the studio already working on more songs to hopefully release another single in a month or so’s time. I want it to be a busy year for me and hopefully get to play my own shows soon in Cork and around Ireland. This won’t be the last you here from Dylan Brickley.”
