April award for Downey Jr

As the Cork Under 20 hurlers went unbeaten through the group stages of the Munster Championship, they had a number of key players - none more so then quality defender Eoin Downey.

In recognition to the role he played in that phase of the championship, Eoin was presented with the 96FM/C103 GAA Sports Star of the month award for April in association with the Rochestown Park Hotel.

It was a mixed month for the Glen Rovers player as he made his senior championship debut in the draw with Tipperary, but then because of a bizarre rule, he had to sit and watch as his under 20 colleagues were crowned Munster champions.

While delighted to be getting the award, Eoin was naturally disappointed at missing the final.

“Well I am delighted to be honoured here today and especially to have my family and club members and teammates present, but it was annoying to miss the final. I had no issue playing two games in the 7 days as I have done it in the past.”

That aside, Eoin is now really looking forward to the final. “It was great that we won the Munster Final after a tough game, now we all can’t wait to play Offaly in the All-Ireland Final.”

County Board Chairman Marc Sheehan in congratulating Eoin said: “It has been a hectic few weeks and months for Eoin and at all times you gave some fantastic displays and you can feel very proud of your contribution to the Munster success and hopefully the All-Ireland to follow.”

Marc also paid tribute to the sponsors of these prestigious awards, “our sincere thanks to Rochestown Park Hotel for the courtesy we receive here at all times, and to 96FM/C103 for their continued and extensive coverage of our games at both club and inter-county level.”

Eoin was accompanied by his parents Angela and Paul, along with his brother Robert an established member of the Cork senior team. In fact when they both played in the championship game against Tipperary they became the first brothers from Glen Rovers to play on the same team since the Buckleys many years ago.

Also in attendance were John O’Callaghan President Glen Rovers and PRO Mary Newman, Michael Byrne Chairman St Nick’s and Pat Horgan Vice-Chairman Cork County Board.

The gala banquet will be held on 26 January 2024.
