The brothers play Cork this Friday.

The return of the brothers hypnotic

The brothers are back! The boys from Chicago, who are all sons of jazz legend Phil Cohran are returning to the Pavilion this week to play another rousing show.

Hypnotic Brass Ensemble have been touring for years now, and have played Cork many times but they remain one of the great live acts.

They have toured throughout Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa and South America playing with everyone from Prince, Mos Def, Mick Jones (The Clash) and Damon Albarn. They’ve performed Coachella, WOMAD AU, Jazz at Lincoln Center, The Sydney Opera House and Carnegie Hall. The documentary film ‘Brothers Hypnotic’, explores their music, work ethic, life and experience of being raised by a jazz legend.

They collaborated on tracks with the group Rocket Juice & the Moon, who include Damon Albarn, Flea from Red Hot Chili Peppers and legendary Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen on the group's self-titled debut album.

The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble have been favourites in Cork and have sold out shows in the Pavilion over many years.

The music that the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble play might best be described as highly composed instrumental hip-hop. If it is jazz, it's closer in spirit to jazz from 100 years ago; accomplished and energetic music designed for dancing. Their music fuses a huge range of style together.

The seven brass players in the group are all sons of the esteemed jazz trumpeter Phil Cohran, a former member of the Sun Ra Arkestra.

The members were steeped in this musical influence from early on and have been playing together their entire lives. After performing in a youth ensemble put together by their father in the 1980s, the band officially formed as the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble in 1999.
