Barry’s Tea was the clear favourite in Cork.

Top of the shops in ‘23

Here’s something that won’t surprise you - 80% of tea bought in Cork from one supermarket chain was Barry’s compared to only 20% of Lyons.

The real question is why so many people in Cork bought Lyons tea!

Tesco Ireland’s Clubcard Unpacked data revealed that as well as that over two thirds of customers in Cork chose Heinz over Chef tomato ketchup (67% vs. 33%).

Other data shows that milk was top of the shops last year. Different types of milk like full fat and regular in different sizes ranked #1, #2, #3 and #5 in the top five list of most purchased items in 2023.

The last top 5 spot was quite a surprise with avocado ranking #4 in the top five list.

Tesco Ireland recently launched Clubcard Unpacked 2023 - which allows Clubcard members to get a personalised look at their shopping habits, as well as see how much they’ve saved in the past year.

In total in 2023, Tesco Ireland customers sipped their way through over 2.3 million boxes of tea bags.

Although the perfect ‘cuppa’ traditionally brings families and friends together and solves all of life’s problems, heated discussions can ensue when the question is posed – Barry’s or Lyons?

Barry’s easily came out on top as Cork’s (and the nation’s) favourite tea last year, with the majority of Cork customers (80%) purchasing Barry’s tea bags during their shop, compared to 20% reaching for Lyons.

The Irish public overwhelmingly chose to add Tayto to their baskets over King (96% vs. 4%), but we are firmly a crisp-lovingly nation, having chomped our way through over 11.7 million bags of cheese & onion and salt & vinegar crisps in 2023!

However, cheese & onion wins overall, with two thirds (67%) choosing the classic flavour compared to one third (33%) going for the tangy salt & vinegar.

For saucy accompaniments, over two thirds of customers in Cork (67%) purchased Heinz Tomato Ketchup vs. Chef Tomato Ketchup (33%), similar to that of the nation’s overall preference (Heinz 70% vs. Chef 30%).
