Liz Cullinane will attempt to scale Mount Everest in memory of her mother and to raise money for cancer care.

Cancer warrior to place mum's wig on Everest summit

A Cork woman is preparing to scale Mount Everest to raise funds to help people who are battling cancer, the disease she lost her mother to almost 30 years ago.

Leeside 'cancer warrior' Liz Cullinane, who herself was diagnosed with cancer in 2014, is taking on the world’s highest peak this year to raise money for Cork Cancer Care Centre.

Liz's life took a transformative turn when her mother, a beacon of strength, succumbed to cancer on 10 January 1996. In the face of this heart-wrenching loss, Liz channelled her grief into a force for good, dedicating herself to supporting those affected by cancer.

Her own battle with cancer has shaped Liz's character and fuelled her determination to make a lasting impact.

When she reaches the summit, Liz plans to place her mother’s wig proudly at the highest point on the planet in honour of her mum.

“This climb is more than just conquering Everest,” says Liz. “It's conquering fear, grief, and the limitations life imposes. With each step towards the summit, I carry the hopes and dreams of cancer survivors, patients, and their families.”

Documenting her journey through writing and social media, Liz aims to inspire others facing similar challenges and rally support for the Cork Cancer Care Centre. She describes the climb as a memoir in motion, a story of triumph over adversity, and a dedication to those who have faced the battle against cancer.

In support of her climb and to raise funds for Cork Cancer Care Centre, a GoFundMe page has been set up at gofundme.com/f/summiting-hope-lizs-everest-ascent-for-cccc.

Liz’s expedition can be followed on social media under #EverestForACause, #LizsJourney, and #ClimbingForCorkCancerCare.
