Cork’s food is terre-ing it up

Cork is now home to a pair of two Michelin starred restaurants! Terre at Castlemartyr Resort has joined Dede in Baltimore in being awarded the very prestigious two star Michelin award.

There are no three star restaurants in Ireland and only 5 two star eateries - the other three are all in Dublin.

Bastion in Kinsale and Chestnut in Ballydehob have also retained their Michelin stars making it a great week for Cork food.

Cork has lost a one star Michelin restaurant after Takeshi Miyazaki closed his Ichigo Ichie at Fenn’s Quay late last year.

Last week his new venture Ichigo Ichie Bistro & Natural Wine in the same location was awarded a Bib Gourmand despite only opening in January.

The Michelin Guide UK & Ireland awards ceremony took place in Manchester on Monday night and this year marks the 50th anniversary of The Michelin Guide in Great Britain & Ireland.

A total of 1,162 restaurants are included in the selection this year while only 6 restaurants gained a second star this year.

Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of The Michelin Guide commented: “The dining scene in Great Britain & Ireland continues to be both innovative and impressive. With a new three Michelin star and 6 new two star restaurants, the selection’s global standing has grown even further.

“Among all of the newly awarded stars, both the quality and variety of the dining experiences are wonderful to see. There are enormously talented chefs turning their hands to anything from wood-fired sharing plates to finely tuned sushi,” he added.

Terre first opened at Castlemartyr Resort in October 2022. Chef Patron Vincent Crepel said: “Being awarded the second Michelin star is the realisation of a lifelong dream and a wonderful elevation to receive from the inspectors. I am so proud of the team and what we have achieved.

“We have had a fantastic year and are looking forward to welcoming guests again in 2024. We aim to make a visit to Terre accessible to diners and we are fortunate to work with great local and international suppliers who help inspire and shape our menus. Receiving the second star is a tribute to the creativity and standards we aim to reach and maintain.”

Terre received a Michelin star after just six months with chef de partie Shauna Murphy winning the Euro-Toques Young Chef of the Year 2023.

The Terre menus are meticulously created boasting vibrant flavours and visual appeal and complexity fusing traditional French cooking techniques to Asian ingredients.
