Storm Babet destroyed facilities at the East Cork club.

Fundraiser for clubhouse damaged during storm

By Ellen O'Brien

A football club in East Cork has launched a fundraiser to raise money for a new clubhouse and shop after Storm Babet destroyed the previous facilities in October 2023.

Corkbeg AFC in Whitegate East Cork is collaborating with Hubcap Theatre for the fundraiser. The aim is to raise funds to replace the clubhouse and shop that were lost during Storm Babet last year.

The fundraising event is a performance called ‘The Parish’ and will take place at the Aghada Community Centre on Saturday 23 March. The performance written and performed by Michael Ryan and Sean Kelleher is a light comedy that brings to life a range of characters that can be found in every rural community.

It focuses on themes such as conflict and treachery in the community but ultimately ends up celebrating friendship and community creating a bond that overcomes all adversity.

A spokesperson for the club said: “The club have sourced replacement facilities and are appealing for local support to raise funds to put these new facilities in place”. They added that the night “will be a memorable fundraiser for the club and will be full of laughs, banter and great family entertainment’’.

Tickets can be purchased on the website gr8events.ie and are on sale for €22. Doors open 7.30pm and the show begins at 8pm.
