Upcoming event aims to celebrate ADHD in the arts

An event showcasing the unique creativity often associated with ADHD will take place in Cork in April.

Hosted by ADHD Ireland, ADHD and the Arts will see three creatives working within the arts discuss their own experience of ADHD and how it has influenced their artistic journeys.

The three artists are Charles Neilson aka ZootGhost, a globally known artist and illustrator who has illuminated city streets from Singapore to New York City; Louise Barry, an accomplished youth mentor, author, and singer-songwriter who trained at the Paul McCartney School in London; and Sean Downey, a talented videographer who uses his camera to amplify the voices of marginalised communities.

At the event, which takes place at the Triskel Arts Centre on 4 April, each artist will be interviewed by Cork journalist Mike McGrath Bryan.

Speaking ahead of the event, Cork ADHD Ireland Service Development Manager, Martin Finn, said he is glad of the opportunity to offer an insight into some lesser-known characteristics and opportunities of ADHD.

“People with ADHD are confronted with many challenges as they navigate a primarily neurotypical world,” said Mr Finn.

“However, ADHD mind mechanisms can also be harnessed for exceptional creativity.

“We are excited to spotlight the positive aspects of ADHD, emphasising its unique connection to creativity while exploring the transformative power of art in the lives of those with ADHD.

“I hope attendees will gain a new perspective on ADHD through witnessing the artists showcase and discuss their art,” he added.

ADHD, which stands for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, is a neurodevelopmental difference affecting approximately 5% of the population. It can lead to challenges in organisation, focus, and self-regulation. ADHD Ireland’s mission is to make life better for people with ADHD through support, education, and promoting awareness.
