David Goldberg to give talk

History enthusiasts are in for a treat as David Goldberg, author of the acclaimed book 'Gerald & Sheila Goldberg of Cork: A Son's Perspective' is set to deliver a talk at Douglas Library.

The recently published book, written by David, chronicles the fascinating lives of his parents Gerald and Sheila. Not only were they the first Jewish Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of the city, they also made immense contributions to the cultural fabric of Cork, along with numerous charitable projects which still survive today.

Gerald became an accomplished lawyer, setting up his own practice and working in the field for 62 years. In 1977, he secured the nomination for the position of lord mayor and in June of that same year, donned the prestigious chain of office. The historic milestone was described by David as the “zenith of his career”.

For her part, Sheila was one of the founders of the Meals on Wheels, she also was responsible for building Abode, which provides services to people with physical and sensory disabilities. She spearheaded the building of hydrotherapy pool for children at the Lavanagh Centre, and developed the Cork Orchestral Society and instituted the Cork lunchtime concerts.

The talk, on Thursday 11 April at 2.30pm, will be illustrated and refreshments will be provided. Admission is free and all are welcome.
