From Cork to Korea for Laura

A Cork artist’s provocative work is being exhibited across South Korea this summer.

Laura Noonan’s ‘Bordolle’ is centred on female representation and will be shown in two locations in South Korea. The work is currently in Jaegan Art Museum (Art in Dongsan) and will move to Bank Art Fair at the beginning of August.

The artist will be travelling to Korea in August for the last leg of the exhibition tour.

She explained how the tour came about: “I was in Canada in April of this year exhibiting as part of Art Vancouver Contemporary Art Fair where I was approached by the Jaegan Art Museum (Art in Dongsan) to exhibit in their gallery and by extension Bank Art Fair.”

Laura Noonan is a self-taught artist and curator from Cork. She works predominately with lens-based fine art and acrylics and recently returned to Cork after living abroad for many years. She is now Partnerships and Development Director with Cork Opera House.

She was recently nominated for the Rising Star category of the Network Cork’s Businesswoman of the Year awards.

Noonan said ‘Bordolle’, a digital photo on canvas “attempts to express the complexities built into female identity and the notions of femininity that come with it. The ragdolls portrayed in the images are a symbol of innocence, constancy, and uniformity. The ragdoll itself first appeared at the turn of the 20th century and established ideologies around femininity that we still relay and limit women to today.”

In addition to her practice, Laura has developed arts-based programming across Ireland, the UK and Canada that ranges from student mentoring initiatives and workshops to art competitions, artist talks, film screenings and gallery hops. She has worked with Capture Photography Festival, the Magenta Foundation, TED, the Craft Council of Ireland and more.
