Calls for patience following fire in underground carpark

A Cork TD has called on Cork County Council to provide a period of grace and additional patience from traffic wardens following a fire in an underground carpark in Mallow.

Newly elected Independent Ireland TD for Cork North-Central Ken O’Flynn said as the Christmas season approaches, the need for adequate parking for shoppers, employees, and local businesses in Mallow becomes increasingly critical.

In a letter to Cork County Council CE Moira Murrell, Deputy O’Flynn said the closure of the carpark at the Market Square Shopping Centre will undoubtedly impact trade in the town.

“It is essential that we adopt a coordinated approach to support the commercial wellbeing of our community while this facility remains unavailable,” wrote Deputy O’Flynn.

He continued: “To support our local traders and ensure that they, along with all ratepayers, are afforded a level playing field during this busy time, I urge you to consider implementing temporary parking solutions or alternative arrangements. This proactive support will not only assist local businesses but also enhance the shopping experience for residents and visitors alike.”

The underground carpark at Mallow’s Market Square Shopping Centre remains closed following reports of a car having burst into flames on Sunday evening.

A clean-up operation is currently underway. No injuries were reported in relation to the incident.

“Together, we can ensure that our town continues to thrive despite the challenges posed by the car park's closure,” said Mr O’Flynn.
