A Cork husband and wife are very grateful after a garda came to their aid during an appendix emergency.

Garda promised ‘a lot of pints’ after appendix rescue

A huge thanks and the promise of lots of pints has been extended to a fast-acting member of An Garda Síochána in Cork city.

The garda in question sprung to the aid of a distressed husband and wife on Sunday during the Cork City Marathon as they desperately tried to get to Cork University Hospital.

Redditor duncthefunk78 took to Cork’s dedicated Reddit page to thank the garda who they encountered by the Thomas Davis bridge having forgotten that the marathon was on that day.

The concerned husband said he had contacted emergency services after his wife had taken ill and was told that they needed to get to CUH as fast as possible as the ambulance waiting time would have been considerable.

He wrote: “Huge, huge thanks to the garda that escorted myself and my wife to the CUH this morning at the height of the marathon.

“Missus’ appendix got infected and we were told by 999 to get to the CUH as quickly as we could as we'd be waiting a while for an ambulance,” added duncthefunk78.

The relieved husband said he “nearly imploded” when he remembered the Cork City Marathon was on as he and his wife made their way up the Mardyke.

“Garda at the checkpoint spotted my missus in distress and without hesitation said, ‘Follow me’ and proceeded to escort us all the way from Sundays Well into Ballincollig and down on to the South Link,” he added.

“As it turned out, her appendix was infected, and she's getting surgery tonight/tomorrow morning, so thank you Garda, massive, massive thanks. I owe you a lot of pints.”
