€375,000 budget for Dunkettle art
A call has gone out to Irish and international artists to submit proposals for a bold and artistically ambitious permanent sculptural work.
This landmark public art commission will be placed at one of Ireland’s busiest road junctions and will be seen by thousands of people every day.
Visual artists and artist teams are invited to create proposals for the permanent sculpture as part of the Dunkettle Interchange Per Cent for Art Scheme. The Government initiative allows for 1% of the cost of any publicly funded capital, infrastructural and building development to be allocated to the commissioning of a work of art. The winning artwork will be selected through an open, two-stage competition. The budget for the artwork is €375,000.
Cork County Council, in partnership with Cork City Council and Transport Infrastructure Ireland, announced details of the project on Monday.
Mayor of the County of Cork Cllr Joe Carroll said: “Cork County Council is delighted to announce the Dunkettle Interchange Per Cent for Art Scheme alongside our partners Cork City Council and TII. This is a great opportunity for Cork to have a landmark artwork at a gateway to the city and county.
“For the successful artist, it means their work will be seen by thousands of people every day. An average of 95,000 vehicles use the junction daily and we look forward to seeing the artwork that will go alongside this impressive feat of engineering.”
The artwork commission is organised through Cork County Council, supported by a Public Art Working Group, comprised of representatives from Cork City Council, Cork County Council and Transport Infrastructure Ireland. Funding for the project has been provided through Transport Infrastructure Ireland.
Further information on the steps involved in the commissioning process is available from corkcoco.ie. The deadline for applications is 12 noon on 12 August.
