New respite centres open in East Cork

By Liudmyla Bortok

Two new respite centres have opened in East Cork catering for people with intellectual disabilities. One centre in Ladysbridge will support children, while the other, based in Cloyne, will support adults

These new services offer short-term stays in a safe, welcoming environment. They give people with disabilities a chance to enjoy a change of scene, take part in social activities, and build independence. At the same time, families and carers can rest, knowing their loved ones are receiving high-quality care.

Respite care plays a vital role in supporting both individuals and their families. It helps reduce stress at home and supports long-term care by giving carers a much-needed break. Children and adults also benefit from new experiences and opportunities to develop important life skills.

The centres were launched by Talbot Group and are open seven days a week, nearly every day of the year. They are designed to make respite more available and responsive, particularly in urgent situations where families need immediate support. The new facilities have been funded by HSE South West.

Tánaiste Simon Harris welcomed the news. “These new respite services in East Cork are more than buildings – they represent dignity, compassion, and progress. They are a powerful reflection of our commitment to ensuring that every person with an intellectual disability has access to the support and care they deserve.”

Minister for Disabilities Anne Rabbitte added: “Every family supporting a loved one with a disability needs to know they are not alone. These centres are a lifeline – providing care, building independence, and giving families the space to breathe.”

Laverne McGuinness, Chief Executive Officer of Talbot Group, said: “We believe respite is more than a break — it is a pathway to confidence, independence, and community connection for the service users, and a vital support for their families.”
