A boost for town centres

A scheme aimed at improving the appearance of main thoroughfares in towns across Cork county was launched this week.

On Tuesday, Cork County Council announced details of the Streetscape Enhancement Scheme for towns across the eight municipal districts. Tenants or owners of occupied buildings in key locations within towns may apply for financial assistance to improve the appearance of these buildings under the scheme, with priority being given to occupied commercial premises.

Welcoming the launch of the scheme, Mayor of the County of Cork Cllr Mary Linehan Foley, said: “I whole-heartedly welcome this scheme, which will give a boost to our town centres by supporting businesses and property owners in improving their buildings, and making our town centres more attractive to residents and visitors alike.

“I encourage business and property owners to engage with Cork County Council to avail of this scheme, and also spread the word among neighbouring businesses as this can lead to increased grant amounts for businesses on the same street.”

Applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis having regard to positive impact on the streetscape.

Moira Murrell, Chief Executive of Cork County Council, added: “Streetscape Enhancement Scheme funding will facilitate improvement in the appearance of our town centres, and is one of a number of measures that Cork County Council is employing to strengthen the vibrancy of our towns. I look forward to seeing the impact of this scheme on the streets of our town centres across the county.”

The scheme includes four different support measures, ranging from 60% grants for works to 100% for materials. Aspects covered include painting and improvements to shop-front signage as well as the cost of materials.

Guidance is available from Cork County Council on colour palette and design, conservation of traditional Irish shop fronts, and the use of the Irish language in signage.
