Carrigaline Ladies net top award
Carrigaline Ladies Gaelic Football Club has made Cork proud, being named the overall winner of the Lidl Plus LGFA Rewards Scheme 2025.
The club secured the top prize of €50,000 thanks to the passion, dedication, and team spirit shown both on and off the pitch.
The national scheme, run by Lidl Ireland in partnership with the Ladies Gaelic Football Association (LGFA), rewards grassroots clubs across Ireland for their commitment to growing the game and supporting women in sport. This year, competition saw Carrigaline LGFA go head-to-head with three other finalists — Gráinne Mhaols (Co. Galway), Lurgan (Co. Cavan), and Navan O’Mahony’s (Co. Meath) — in a public vote following the creation of heartfelt club videos.
Communities across the country got behind their local teams, but Carrigaline LGFA stood out. Their video captured the passion, drive, and unity that defines their club. In the end, they earned the most votes, a clear sign of the strong backing they have in Cork and beyond.
This win couldn’t have come at a better time. The club’s senior ladies team recently won the Division Two league in Cork — their third promotion in a row. In 2026, they’ll play in Division One, a remarkable achievement.
Tara O’Connor, Regional Managing Director for Munster at Lidl Ireland, praised the club’s achievement. “A huge congratulations to Carrigaline LGFA for showing how impactful grassroots support can be in encouraging young girls to engage with sport from an early age. Carrigaline LGFA embodies that community pride we see through our national partnership, and it’s great to see this passion and excitement on the build up to the Passage West GAA Ladies Football Blitz 2025 that will be kicking off in September this year.”
The Lidl Plus LGFA Rewards Scheme, now in its fourth year, has become a powerful tool for supporting women’s sport across Ireland. This year, more than 740 clubs took part, receiving new jerseys worth over €380,000. Since its launch, Lidl has invested more than €800,000 in local LGFA teams.
Trina Murray, President of the LGFA, also commended the programme: “The Lidl Plus LGFA Rewards Scheme has grown in momentum year after year. This initiative offers an incredible opportunity for communities to demonstrate their support while earning important funds for clubs. It’s been fantastic to witness so many teams get involved and create lasting benefits for their players and facilities.”
Three runner-up clubs will each receive €10,000 in funding to continue their work promoting women in sport. But it is Carrigaline LGFA who now stand as a symbol of what dedication, unity, and heart can achieve.
Their win isn’t just about a cash prize — it’s about recognising the unwavering spirit of a team that represents the very best of Cork.
