Explore Cork’s heritage

If you’re under 18, don’t waste August indoors as Cork’s heritage is waiting, and it’s free!

A new initiative by the Office of Public Works (OPW), will see young people across Ireland visit OPW-managed heritage sites for free throughout the month of August. This nationwide offer is about encouraging the younger generation to connect with Ireland’s history and heritage. From medieval castles to grand gardens and battle-scarred forts, there’s something for everyone.

In County Cork, the options are spectacular. You can take a stroll through history, explore hidden stories, and enjoy the outdoors while the summer sun is still with us. Here are just a few highlights:

Doneraile Court and Estate: Overlooks 160 hectares of landscaped parkland teeming with wildlife

Annes Grove Gardens: A peaceful estate near Castletownroche, home to the Annesley family since the 1600s

Barryscourt Castle: A stunning medieval tower house newly restored to its former glory

Fota Arboretum and Gardens: One of Europe’s finest collections of rare trees and plants

Charles Fort: A massive military fortress with a dramatic history, including a 13-day siege during the Williamite Wars

Michael Collins birthplace: Visit the childhood home of one of Ireland’s most important revolutionary leaders

Ilnacullin – Garinish Island: A magical island garden accessed by boat from Glengarriff.

Independent Cllr and historian Kieran McCarthy said: "Hats off to the OPW on this initiative. All of the sites are impressive in their array of stories. Many of the sites host heritage curiosities to explore, are about the stories of Ireland and its evolving sense of identity, create space to take it easy, opportunities to stay healthy whilst walking about, and above all make precious family memories.”
