‘Remarkable’ community rallies after housefire

The Carrigaline community has rallied behind those who lost their homes in a devastating fire over the weekend.

No one was injured in the blaze which broke out at approximately 12.45pm on Sunday afternoon in Upper Kilmoney in Carrigaline.

It’s understood that two homes were badly damaged in the fire which required fire service units from Carrigaline, Crosshaven, Midleton, and Cork city to bring under control.

Local councillor Audrey Buckley extended her sympathies to the two families whose homes were destroyed.

“This is an incredibly difficult time for them, but I know Carrigaline’s remarkable community spirit will shine through once again,” said the councillor.

She added: “I want to extend my sincere thanks to our fire service and all the emergency personnel who responded so quickly and professionally. Their bravery and dedication prevented further tragedy, and our community is deeply grateful for their service.”

Another local councillor, Úna McCarthy, said it was devastating to witness the fire.

She said: “The wind made conditions extremely difficult to contain, and my thoughts are with the families affected.

“I want to pay tribute to the firefighters from Carrigaline, Crosshaven, Midleton, and Cork city, whose bravery prevented the fire from reaching a third home,” added Cllr McCarthy.

Gardaí, who assisted with the fire services, said no offences have been disclosed at this time.

A spokesperson for the Carrigaline Fire & Rescue service praised emergency personnel for their efforts on Sunday.

They said: “They played a blinder, and we should be so proud to have them serve our community here at Carrigaline fire station.

“Thanks to our back up from our neighbouring brigade Crosshaven Fire & Rescue for your assistance.

“Also want to thank CO11 (Cork city fire brigade) for their assistance with their new aerial platform and additional breathing apparatus wearers.

“We would like to say a special thanks to Dave and Karen Kingston for providing us with tea, coffee, and sandwiches for the crews on the scene which were very much needed and appreciated,” added the spokesperson.
