The hills are alive!
Cork is no strangers to hills and they are about to come alive.
Cork Opera House has this morning announced a new production of the beloved musical theatre classic, ‘The Sound of Music’, coming to its iconic stage next summer.
This revival promises to transport audiences to the picturesque hills of Austria, with a visually stunning and heartfelt production of one of the most cherished musicals of all time.
Set against the sweeping beauty of the Austrian Alps, ‘The Sound of Music’ will be brought to life with dazzling sets, vibrant costumes, and unforgettable performances. Follow the heart-warming journey of Maria, the spirited governess whose love of music transforms the lives of the von Trapp family, as she teaches them about joy, love, and hope in the face of a changing world.
Featuring an instantly recognisable score by the legendary Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, the production will include such iconic songs as ‘My Favourite Things’, ‘Do-Re-Mi’, ‘Sixteen Going on Seventeen’, ‘Climb Every Mountain’, and of course, the titular ‘The Sound of Music’.
Eibhlín Gleeson, CEO of Cork Opera House and Director Davey Kelleher (‘Hansel und Gretel’, ‘The Cork Proms’), promise an unmissable experience for the whole family, bursting with excitement, colour and breath-taking orchestrations.
“Securing the rights for this nostalgic title in our 170th anniversary year has created such a sense of serendipity for the team here at Cork Opera House,” said Ms Gleeson.
She added: “'The Sound of Music' started a new wave of in-house musical theatre productions for us when we produced it in 2012. It set the scene for what was possible for Irish stages. Since then we have mounted musicals such as 'Grease', 'Annie', 'The Wizard of Oz' and more. We're delighted that 12 years later, we are returning to this iconic classic.
“Through our decade of experience and expertise, we are excited to assemble a phenomenal cast and creative team of local Cork and national talent, to deliver a production that will be both a nostalgic treat for long-time fans and a magical introduction for a new generation. 'The Sound of Music' is a story of hope, family, and the power of music; themes that resonate just as strongly today as they did when the musical was first created and we cannot wait for you to see the next development in Cork Opera House's musical theatre journey.”
Tickets from €37.50 are on sale from Cork Opera House box office and online at corkoperahouse.ie from Thursday 21 August.
