Steven takes July award

Finbarr Mc Carthy

St Finbarr’s captain Steven Sherlock has enjoyed a good few weeks on the playing field as he played a big part in their recent victories.

In the Division 1 League final win over Clonakilty, he bagged a very impressive tally of 0-18, while he also chipped in some vital scores as they secured their place in the QF of the Premier Senior Football Championship.

In recognition of this Steven was presented with the 96FM/C013 GAA Sports Star award in association with the Rochestown Park Hotel.

Steven was delighted to be honoured. “Winning the league was very important for us and set us up nicely for the championship and we now look forward to playing Carrigaline knowing we are into the quarter final.”

As for scoring 0-18 in the league final, he said: “Well, some of them were two pointers and made easy by the quality of ball but yeah it’s nice to score that many.”

Like most nowadays he is a big fan of the new rules. He said: “Absolutely it’s made it a really different and much better, people now are actually going to football matches knowing it’s entertaining to watch not everyone behind the ball.”

And his favourite rule? “I suppose as a forward I would say the 3 up it creates great space and certainly makes my job easier anyway,” he said.

Steven opted out of the Cork football squad earlier in the year, as for his return, he said: “We’ll see just now I will be concentrating in the club and see where that takes us.”

County Board Chairman Pat Horgan congratulated Steven on his award. “He has been a wonderful role model for both club and county over the years and I wish him continued success going forward while our thanks also to 96FM/C013 and the Rochestown Park Hotel for their ongoing support for Cork GAA.”

Isabel Keane from 96FM and Tom Tobin from the Rochestown Park Hotel also congratulated Steven and wished him continued success for the rest of the season.

Family and club officials including St Finbarr’s President Donal Murray and Liam Hodnett were in attendance to acknowledge a worthy recipient for July.

The Barr’s captain is the latest footballer from the club to pick up a monthly award among the previous recipients are Michael Shields, Dylan Quinn, Sam Ryan, Ian Maguire and John Kerins.
