The new car park will provide an additional 46 spaces.

Planning is approved for a ‘significant upgrade’

Planning permission to extend the car park at Millstreet Train Station has been approved, it was confirmed this week.

Described by Iarnród Éireann as a “significant upgrade”, the new car park will provide an additional 46 spaces at the station, bringing the total number of available spaces to 82. Including seven spaces, which in the future will become EV charging stations and five spaces for persons with reduced mobility. The works will also include the provision of 10 bicycle parking spaces, a bicycle shelter and the creation of a bus set down/interchange facility.

Iarnród Éireann has said that its planning application to Cork County Council to undertake this “major upgrade” has been approved and that procurement will commence soon for the project and a Contract is expected to be awarded before the end of 2025. Works will commence in the spring and will take approximately nine months to complete.

Speaking on Tuesday, Colin Grimes, Programme Manager for Network Enhancements said: “My team and I are really looking forward to commencing work on this major upgrade, which will greatly enhance the facilities at Millstreet Station.”

This planned upgrade is part of Iarnród Éireann’s national car park expansion programme. Funded by the Department of Transport, through the National Transport Authority, the network wide car park expansion programme’s objective is to improve access on foot, by bike, by bus to and at rail stations and address capacity issues where applicable.
