Blood supply under pressure

Supply remains under pressure, with an extra 200 units of O negative blood urgently needed at the St Finbarr’s Hospital clinic over the next two weeks.

Lord Mayor of Cork, Fianna Fáil Cllr Fergal Dennehy, has joined the IBTS in calling on the people of Cork to donate blood, which could provide life-saving support.

"I urge the people of Cork to consider donating blood, especially as we face a nationwide shortage. We never know when we or someone we love might need this life-saving resource. So, I encourage everyone to visit their local donation centre. The staff are fantastic and there to assist you every step of the way. Please, make the effort to donate—it could make all the difference.”

Julianne Kelly, Donor Services Manager at IBTS, highlighted the role that local businesses can play in supporting the blood supply.

"We need the support of Cork companies. Many employers have younger workforces, and we urgently need more young donors to build a strong and sustainable blood supply. By encouraging employees to give blood, local companies can make a direct and life-saving contribution to the community. We are perfectly located just a stone’s throw from the city centre, with free parking on site, and we are happy to facilitate group bookings for companies."

Appointments can be booked by calling 1800-731137, and eligibility can be checked at www.giveblood.ie. For group bookings, contact 021-480 7400.

The IBTS is urging everyone in Cork to step forward. Every donation counts, and your blood could save a life.
