Dual star David wins August accolade

Newcestown are long renowned for their dual commitments that have seen them regularly progress in the county championships and this year their footballers are in a quarter-final on Sunday against Carrigaline.

One of their key players in that progression which included a win over champions Castlehaven was David Buckley who kicked some spectacular points along the way.

In recognition, David was the August winner of the 96FM/C013 GAA Sports Star of the Month for August in association with the Rochestown Park Hotel.

The dual star was delighted to be honoured. “Thrilled really but it’s down to my teammates and management that we are in the quarter final and I want to thank them for their continued support,” he said.

Beating Castlehaven was special but the focus now is very much on Carrigaline: “It was as they are such a very good team and going for 3 in a row, but look we quickly got back into training as we know Carrigaline are tough opponents and we will need to be at our best to win but hopefully we can get to the semi-final.”

County Board Chairman Pat Horgan congratulated David: “Newcestown are a remarkable club and this award is well deserved and I wish Newcestown the very best for the rest of the season while our thanks also to 96FM/C013 and the Rochestown Park Hotel for their ongoing support for Cork GAA.”

Tom Tobin of Rochestown Park Hotel also congratulated David and wished him continued success.

Family, club officials including football manger Jim O’Sullivan and hurling manager Niall O’Sullivan along with several teammates were in attendance to acknowledge a worthy recipient for August. David becomes the 4th Newcestown dual player to be honoured with a monthly award, joining Cathrach Keane, Luke Meade and Tadgh Twomey as previous winners.

David now joins the other monthly winners with the overall winner set to be announced at a gala banquet on 30 January.
