Student entrepreneurs inspired at launch of programme

Over 300 transition year students and teachers from secondary schools across the city were at the launch of a major student enterprise competition yesterday.

The 2025 Student Enterprise Programme for Cork city schools was launched on Tuesday by Lord Mayor of Cork, Fergal Dennehy, at a vibrant and interactive Induction Day at the Rochestown Park Hotel.

Hosted by the Local Enterprise Office (LEO) Cork City, the event saw over 300 transition year students and teachers from secondary schools across the city come together, all eager to kick-start their entrepreneurial journey.

The annual programme, which is Ireland’s largest enterprise initiative for second-level students, challenges young people to create, develop and run their own businesses over the course of the school year.

The Induction Day was designed to inform, inspire and energise both students and teachers, featuring practical workshops, inspirational talks and insights from past programme participants. The event also provided an overview of the key stages of the programme and the valuable supports offered by the Local Enterprise Office.

Dr Niall O’Keeffe, Head of Enterprise at LEO Cork City, spoke about the importance of encouraging enterprise from a young age. “We were delighted to see such a strong turnout and level of enthusiasm at this year’s Induction Day. The Student Enterprise Programme is about more than just business – it’s about helping students develop confidence, problem-solving abilities and resilience. We look forward to seeing the innovative ideas that emerge from Cork city students this year.”

Also speaking at the event was Cathy Fitzgibbon, the newly appointed Student Enterprise Programme Coordinator for Cork City Schools. “It was fantastic to meet so many bright and motivated students and teachers in one room. This programme offers a unique opportunity for students to explore creativity, teamwork and real-world entrepreneurship. I’m looking forward to support them on their journey.”

The Student Enterprise Programme continues throughout the academic year, with mentoring, school visits and workshops leading up to local finals in spring and the National Final in May 2025.

Cork city secondary schools that have not yet registered are encouraged to sign up now and seize the opportunity to engage in this entrepreneurial learning experience.
