Cork braces for unsettled weather
Cork is set to experience a spell of unsettled weather on Friday as the remnants of Hurricane Humberto make their way across Ireland.
Met Éireann is warning of heavy rain and strong winds throughout the day, with conditions likely to be at their worst from morning into the evening.
Humberto formed off the coast of the United States before weakening over the Atlantic. Now classed as an ex-hurricane, the system is being driven toward Ireland by a fast-moving jet stream. While it will no longer carry the full force of a hurricane, it is still expected to deliver stormy conditions as it passes over the country.
For Cork, the forecast points to a wet and blustery day. Heavy rain will move in early on Friday and spread quickly across the county. Strong and gusty southwesterly winds will develop, making driving and outdoor activity more difficult. Although the worst of the winds are expected to hit the north and west of Ireland, Cork may still experience hazardous gusts and surface flooding in some areas. Conditions will remain unsettled overnight, with further showers and persistent winds.
Elsewhere in the country, forecasters are warning of more severe weather. Cathal Nolan of Ireland’s Weather Channel said the storm could bring damaging winds across Connacht, the Midlands, and Ulster, with gusts not far off those seen during Storm Eowyn last February. That storm caused hundreds of millions of euro in damage, and while Humberto may not reach the same intensity, its path is being closely watched. For now, Cork is bracing for a wet and windy Friday, with a reminder to take care on the roads and keep up to date with weather updates.
