Caring is 'a commitment'

A science and technology company with operations in Blarney and Carrigtwohill has announced the launch of a new initiative to support employees who are caring for loved ones.

Merck’s global Caregiver Leave Benefit is designed to complement existing leave entitlements and country-specific regulations, offering flexibility and compassion to employees navigating caregiving responsibilities.

This inclusive benefit is part of Merck’s broader Moments that Matter Leave (MTML) suite, aimed at providing employees with support during life’s most pivotal moments.

Mark Dunphy, Managing Director and Head of Cork Operations, Merck Carrigtwohill said: “At Merck, caring is not just a value, it’s a commitment. We understand that many of our colleagues will, at some point, take on the role of caregiver, often balancing this with work and other life pressures. This new benefit ensures they are supported with the time and resources needed to care for loved ones without compromising their own wellbeing.”

Those at Merck said there is a “strong track record of advocating for caregivers”. Since launching the global Embracing Carers initiative in 2017, the company has collaborated with leading carer organisations worldwide to raise awareness and provide resources, including training and upskilling, to support both caregivers and those they care for.

Following the rollout of Merck’s Global Fertility Benefit Programme in 2024, the Caregiver Leave Benefit is the second fully global, inclusive policy introduced by the company and the first under its new MTML suite. MTML policies are designed to adapt to local employment laws while recognising the diverse needs of Merck’s global workforce.

Founded in 1668, Merck remains majority-owned by its founding family. The company holds the global rights to the Merck name and brand, except in the United States and Canada where it operates as MilliporeSigma in life science, EMD Serono in healthcare, and EMD Electronics in electronics. In 2024, the company generated sales of €21.2 billion in 65 countries.
