City disappoint as relegation confirmed

Cork City FC face the prospect of at least one more season in the First Division after Monday night’s 2-1 loss at home against champions Shelbourne confirmed yet another relegation.

City’s third relegation in six seasons was confirmed following a performance that lacked bite and intensity in front of a sparsely attended Turner’s Cross. 1,611 supporters witnessed the disappointing performance against the Dublin side, a huge contrast to the 5,400 who attended the FAI Cup semi-final recently.

City manager Ger Nash apologised to the fans after the defeat. He told Cork's 96FM & C103: “We haven’t picked up enough wins. It’s as simple as that and the table doesn’t lie so we are in a position that is fair.

“It hurts, it hurts everybody and we have to apologise to the fans. The fans who have followed us away from home have been incredible. We had a special night last week when the fans showed they really were influential. So this club has got a really passionate fanbase and nobody wants to be in the First Division so it hurts.”

He added that he remains committed to bringing City back up.

Daniel Kelly scored for the visitors after 3 minutes but a Seani Maguire equaliser after 79 minutes gave the home side hope before Jack Henry-Francis got the winner for the Dublin side 9 minutes later to confirm City’s limp relegation.

Following Shel’s winner, there were renewed calls from the crowd for a change in the club’s ownership. Some Cork City fans chanted ‘We want Usher out’. Cork City do have the consolation of facing Shamrock Rovers in the FAI Cup Final in the Aviva on 14 November.
