Acclaimed Cork film up for European award
A Cork made film has been nominated for one of Europe’s most prestigious awards.
Leeside director Brendan Canty’s debut feature film ‘Christy’ will go up against four other contenders in the European Parliament’s LUX Audience Award 2025.
A powerful coming-of-age story set on Cork city’s northside, the film follows a young boy who moves in with his estranged brother, exploring themes of youth, working-class life, and child protection. It released in Irish cinemas to huge critical acclaim on 29 August.
The film has already earned international acclaim, winning the Grand Prix Generation 14plus International Jury at the Berlin International Film Festival earlier this year.
The LUX Audience Award, presented by the European Parliament and the European Film Academy, celebrates films that connect people across Europe and spotlight stories that challenge, inspire, and unite audiences.
At this year’s launch, Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament, said: “The LUX Audience Award is about bringing European cinema closer to people, wherever they live, and giving them a chance to see Europe from a different perspective.”
‘Christy’ will be up against ‘Deaf’ by Eva Libertad (Spain); ‘It was Just an Accident’ by Jafar Panahi (Iran, France, Luxembourg); ‘Love Me Tender’ by Anna Cazenave Cambet (France); and ‘Sentimental Value’ by Joachim Trier (Norway, France, Denmark, Germany, Sweden).
Audiences across Ireland and Europe are invited to watch and vote for their favourite film by visiting luxaward-rating.europarl.europa.eu/en.
The winner will be announced in April 2026.
