Senior Suport: It’s important to stay active
Increasing numbers of studies show just how important it is to stay active, connected and social as we grow older. However, it can be difficult to know where to start.
Cork has a wide range of senior services, groups and supports that are working to help older people stay healthy and well.
Staying active
The Cork Sports Partnership delivers a range of initiatives encouraging the elderly to remain physically active. Its Older Adults Programme includes many activities including walking football, chair gym and ‘Staying Fit for the Future’, all aimed at improving mobility, strength and balance. Active Retirement Ireland (ARI) – Cork Branches
Active Retirement Ireland provides opportunities for retired and semi-retired people to participate in educational, cultural, and recreational activities. There are many local branches across the county, including Glanmire, Doneraile and Ovens, who organise events, outings, and meetings to encourage continued participation in community life. Details are available at activeirl.ie.
Friends of the Elderly
Friends of the Elderly is a national charity working to combat loneliness and social isolation among older people, particularly those living alone. The organisation coordinates home visits, friendly phone calls, and community social gatherings. Further information is available at friendsoftheelderly.ie or by phone at (01) 873 1855.
Day Care
There are a wide range of HSE services available to help the elderly to stay well, with day care centres playing a key role in supporting older people to live independently while staying socially connected. These centres offer a wide range of practical and social supports, including midday meals, personal care services such as showers and hairdressing, and access to physiotherapy, occupational therapy, chiropody, and laundry facilities where needed.
Beyond this, day care centres also provide a valuable social outlet. They promote interaction among older people, helping to prevent loneliness and isolation. For a full list of centres across the county, visit hse.ie.
