Northside Community Enterprises is based in Farranferris.

Rooted in the heart of the northside

For over 30 years, one training organisation in Cork has tackled long-term unemployment by supporting people facing barriers to entering or re-entering the workforce.

Founded in 1993, Northside Community Enterprises (NCE) has partnered with Cork communities to create opportunities through Community Employment projects providing employment, education, and upskilling opportunities.

In 1996, NCE Outreach was launched to provide training and employment opportunities for individuals engaged with addiction treatment services from the Tabor Group and Cuan Mhuire.

In partnership with the Department of Social Protection and Cork ETB, NCE delivers training and work experience across various sectors including IT, childcare, health and fitness, catering, gardening, administration, accounts, security and many more.

Accredited courses are offered to community employment participants through the QQI framework, with free or subsidised options for Community Employment Scheme participants in all areas. Cork Workside Initiative Northside Project (Cork WIN) is also based in NCE and has been helping students to return to the workplace or progress to further education since 2006.

NCE also runs a number of social enterprises. Little Hands Childcare and Early Education Centre answers the needs of childcare services for the local community offering up to 100 places for children and will expand to a second centre in Churchfield in 2026.

There is also a catering facility on site which includes a kitchen, bakery and café. It caters for the childcare centre, staff and provides catering services to local businesses and communities.

There is a health and fitness centre on site, a community laundry and a paint recycling initiative, all of which provide practical work experience, meaningful employment, and essential local services. A new city centre location will become a circular economy hub, offering further training opportunities and promoting environmental awareness.

The Department of Social Protection (DSP) recently presented NCE with a commemorative plaque in recognition of 30 years dedication to the CE programme.
