World Cup star brings cricket buzz
All rounder Gareth Delany visits Cork Harlequins next Monday and will talk about what it’s like to face the best players in the world. A key player in Ireland’s T20 side, Delany is known for his aggressive batting and leg-spin.
Cricket has grown steadily in Cork in recent years and at Harlequins, that is most visible in a youth academy that forms the entry point for players aged five to eleven.
The academy runs on Monday evenings, with sessions built around activity and involvement. Young players rotate through batting, bowling and fielding in short, game-based formats that keep them engaged while developing core skills.
“The aim is to make it fun first,” said Richard Gash, Youth Academy Coordinator. “If they enjoy it, they’ll come back, and that’s where everything starts.”
Harlequins has developed a reputation as a volunteer-led, community-focused club, where young players are encouraged to try the game in a relaxed environment and build confidence over time. For many, the academy is a first introduction to cricket, with a pathway into youth teams for those who want to continue.
“It’s about giving every child a chance to be involved,” Gash added. “We keep things simple, keep them moving, and let them learn by playing.”
Delany’s visit adds a different dimension. For young players, it is a chance to see an Ireland international at close range and get a sense of what the game looks like at the top level.
The visit takes place on Monday 30 March from 6 to 7.15pm at Cork Harlequins, with a relaxed, family-friendly format that includes games, a Q&A session, and opportunities for photos and autographs.
For those interested in getting involved, the club has made it easy. “The best place to start is our social channels,” Gash added. “We’re sharing updates, details on the academy, and information about the Delany visit there, so parents can get a feel for what we’re doing before coming along.”
Week by week, young players are turning up, getting involved and improving in an environment that balances structure with enjoyment.
