Roy Keane bids emotional farewell to mam Marie

The mother of former Ireland and Manchester United captain Roy Keane has been laid to rest in Cork city.

Marie Keane, who lived in Rathpeacon, passed away peacefully on Friday surrounded by loved ones at Marymount Hospice aged 79.

Predeceased by her husband Mossie in 2019, Marie leaves behind her five children, Denis, Johnson, Hilary, Roy, and Pat, her many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and extended family and friends.

Marie was laid to rest on Tuesday at St Catherine’s Cemetery, Kilcully, following a requiem mass in the Church of the Resurrection, Farranree, during which her son Roy gave an emotional eulogy.

The mass was attended by throngs of mourners wishing to pay tribute to Marie, including former Republic of Ireland and Arsenal defender and Leeds United manager David O’Leary.

Taking to social media at the weekend, Roy paid tribute to his mother, posting a photo of the two of them with the caption: “You'll always be the boss.”

Cobh Ramblers, Roy Keane’s club before signing for Nottingham Forest in 1990, posted a warm tribute to Marie.

The club wrote: “Everyone at Cobh Ramblers is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Marie Keane, mother of our former player and club legend Roy Keane.

“Marie was a constant pillar of support during Roy's early days here at St Colman's Park, and her presence is a cherished part of our club's history,” the statement added.
