County mayor honours some ‘local heroes’

There were honours all around at County Hall recently where two civic receptions were held in recognition of five worthy recipients.

Last week, Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr Mary Linehan Foley, bestowed her highest honour upon Kilbrittain GAA Club, Aghabullogue GAA Club, the Cork Federation of the Irish Countrywomen’s Association (ICA), National Ambulance service worker Patrick McCarthy, and Cork music group Kingfishr.

In January, Kilbrittain GAA club became the seventh club from Cork to win the All-Ireland Junior Club Hurling Championship at Croke Park. In December, Kingfishr’s hugely popular single ‘Killeagh’ was the No.1 song in the Irish Music Charts for Christmas. Meanwhile, the Cork Federation of the ICA celebrated their 90th anniversary this year, while Aghabullogue GAA club enjoyed an outstanding 2025 season, winning multiple championships and titles in Gaelic football and hurling. Finally, Patrick McCarthy reached the milestone of 25 years of service with the National Ambulance Service.

Commenting on the civic receptions, the County Mayor praised all the five recipients.

She said: “It is a privilege to recognise and celebrate the remarkable achievements of these local heroes. On behalf of the people of county Cork, I wish to express our sincere appreciation to Killbrittain GAA Club, Aghabullogue GAA Club, the Cork Federation of the ICA, Kingfishr and Patrick McCarthy for their commitment, determination, and hard work. I also want to acknowledge the vital support of their families and supporters, who have stood alongside them throughout their journeys.”

Chief Executive of Cork County Council, Moira Murrell, added: “On behalf of Cork County Council, I extend our sincere and warm congratulations to all of you. Comhghairdeachas libh go léir.”
