Help your kids have a fun summer
With the summer holidays now underway, what are your kids doing for the summer? Are you keen to help them avoid screen time?
One highly regarded provider of summer holiday programmes is encouraging families to secure remaining places in communities where they operate throughout Cork.
Demand for holiday childcare continues to be strong, with more than 11,000 places already booked at Sherpa Kids programme across Cork this summer. Places are still available at the 21 locations throughout the county, including in Midleton, Carrigtwohill, Little Island, Blarney, Douglas, Bandon, Bishopstown, Carrigaline, Cobh and Cork city.
Sherpa Kids Ireland is the leading provider of school-aged childcare in Ireland, and its holiday programmes offer children opportunities to stay active, make friends and enjoy a range of activities throughout the school break, while providing support for parents balancing work and family commitments.
New research commissioned by Sherpa Kids Ireland, based on responses from more than 600 parents of primary school-aged children across Ireland, found that 63% rely on holiday programmes during school breaks, highlighting the important role school-age childcare plays in supporting family life and workforce participation.
The research also found that many parents remain unaware of the childcare supports, subsidies and programme options available in their local communities, including the National Childcare Scheme (NCS).
Jennifer Lee, CEO of Sherpa Kids Ireland, said: “Holiday programmes are about much more than childcare. They provide children with opportunities to build friendships, try new activities, develop confidence and remain active throughout the school break. For parents, they provide peace of mind and practical support while balancing work and family commitments.”
The research also highlights the impact school holidays can have on children's routines. Two-thirds of parents reported that their children spend more than two hours per day on digital devices during school holidays, while almost one in five said screen time exceeds five hours daily.
In contrast, 91% believe structured holiday programmes help reduce screen time by providing opportunities for play, social interaction, physical activity and new experiences.
Ms Lee added: “We would encourage families who may not have considered a holiday programme to explore the options in their area. Many of our services continue to have availability throughout the summer months.”
Sherpa Kids is operating holiday programmes with many offering full-day options, flexible booking arrangements and NCS eligibility where applicable. For more information or to book a place, visit sherpakids.ie.
