Muirġen searches for self in her stunning new video

As Cork artist Muirġen wrote her song ‘Brushstrokes’, she imagined jumping off a cliff into water where she would ultimately “meet the undertow” and get to know herself again.

Now, with the release of the song’s official video, filmed by Christian O’Shea at Galley Head Lighthouse in West Cork, we get a sense of one of Ireland’s most fascinating talents truly stepping into her own voice.

Blending elements of Irish tradition with contemporary electropop textures and bilingual storytelling, ‘Brushstrokes’ is about feeling disconnected and desperately craving something more, explains Muirgen.

“I spent much of my 20s kind of shapeshifting, depending on the scenario, and the result was a feeling of not knowing who I really was anymore.

“Being told to ‘trust my gut’ was a mystery to me - what I liked and disliked, what I wanted and didn't want - and it was exhausting,” she says.

For Muirgen, the song represents a commitment to going inward and reconnecting to her younger self while capturing a moment of suspension in the space between who she’s been and who she’s becoming.

In making the video for the single, Muirġen described her collaboration with videographer Christian O'Shea as an absolute dream.

“As an independent artist, projects like this are a labour of love, and I'm incredibly proud of what we've created together.

“The finished video illustrates the inner and outer worlds of the song, where coming face-to-face with the corners of your mind can be ugly but is ultimately a springboard for growth,” she says.

Born and raised in Cork, Muirgen’s musical life has spanned multiple worlds. Classically trained, she later worked as an actor-singer in the UK before joining Grammy-nominated ensemble Celtic Woman, touring internationally for five years.

After eight years living in the UK, Muirgen returned to Ireland at the end of 2024, a move that marked the beginning of a challenging but transformative period.

A chance coffee meeting in June 2025 led to producer Cian Sweeney coming on board to shape her debut EP ‘Loinnir’ which released back in May.

“What Cian created from fragmented demos and streams of consciousness completely changed the project,” Muirgen says.

“His belief gave me the confidence to release this music.”

The acclaimed EP is comprised of windows of self-discovery with a longing for reconnection to Ireland through atmospheric production, bilingual storytelling, and stacked vocal lines that transport the listener to a different world.

'Loinnir' marks what feels like a “cerebral shift”, explains Muirgen, something she feels most people experience coming into their thirties.

“For me, it was a search for something more - a longing for a self who once knew exactly what she liked and what she didn't. I spent so much of my 20s trying to fit a circle into a square, trying to be what I thought others expected me to be,” she says.
