Tributes paid to culture icon

Tributes have poured in for Elmarie Mawe, who for almost three decades was one of the main voices for culture on Cork’s airwaves.

Long-time presenter of ‘The Arts House’ on Cork’s 96FM, Mawe passed away peacefully on 31 August at Marymount University Hospital and Hospice, after a lengthy battle with cancer.

On her passing, Mawe’s contribution to Cork’s vibrant arts and cultural community has been highlighted by those who worked most closely with her.

Her colleagues at 96FM said that they were “devastated” to hear of her passing.

“Elmarie was a defining voice of Sunday morning radio, bringing local theatre, literature, and music into thousands of homes across the city and county.

“Loyal listeners, Cork performers and those in the radio and entertainment industry will remember her warmth and resilience, her beautiful voice and great sense of humour, which all cement her status as one of Cork radio’s most beloved figures,” they said.

Eibhlín Gleeson, CEO of the Cork Opera House said: “Elmarie was a champion, an advocate, a supporter and a friend to all of us in the arts in Cork. She took us into her heart and made space for all of our hopes and dreams.

“She was the true matriarch of the Cork arts scene. She was universally adored by the entire sector. She will be truly missed,” she said.

The Everyman Theatre also paid tribute and recalled that it was there that she first met her husband and long-time collaborator Conor Tallon in 1997, after a performance of 'The Stepping Stone' in which she was starring.

“We will miss Elmarie dearly. Sunday mornings on the radio and opening nights at the theatre won’t be the same without her,” they said.

Requiem mass will be held on Thursday 3 September at noon in St Mary’s Church Innishannon, with funeral afterwards to the adjoining cemetery. The family has asked that the house remain private.
