October is simply scent-sational!

October has arrived with a definite change of mood, and I’m not just talking about the weather.

The lighter, brighter fragrances of summer are making way for something altogether more interesting. Think warm woods, creamy vanilla, a little spice and scents that linger beautifully on skin and knitwear. I’ve always been a fragrance obsessive, and for me, perfume is never simply the finishing touch. It’s part of getting dressed, a reflection of my mood and occasionally a little bit of armour!

Vanilla with a dark side

Now, I love vanilla, but I don’t necessarily want to smell like a bakery. Give me something sophisticated, a little sexy and preferably with an unexpected twist.

Enter Vanilla Aube from Ormonde Jayne, created by perfumer Élodie Bernard in collaboration with Linda Pilkington. This is vanilla for grown-ups, and I’m absolutely here for it. The opening is particularly interesting, with pistachio, cardamom, black pepper and pomegranate bringing a spicy, slightly unexpected freshness. Iris, cashmeran and fig form the heart, before sandalwood, vetiver, ambergris and vanilla take over. What appeals to me is the contrast. There’s a creamy softness, but also something dry, woody and quite sensual. I adore fragrances that have a little tension to them rather than being immediately pretty and predictable. Described as being “felt without being touched”, it’s the sort of perfume that makes you lean in for another sniff. And isn’t that half the fun of fragrance?

A little autumn indulgence

I’m a great believer in making the everyday feel luxurious, particularly when the mornings are darker and getting out of bed requires negotiation.

The Uukumwe collection from Rituals is right up my street, with its warming combination of marula fruit, Namibian myrrh, clove and cinnamon. The Creamy Foaming Shower Gel (€12.90) and Warming Body Scrub (€20.90) sound like a rather fabulous way to start proceedings, while the Hydrating 2-Phase Body Oil (€21.90) brings some much-needed nourishment. I’m particularly drawn to the All-Over Fragrance Mist (€26.90). I love layering fragrance, especially when body products complement rather than compete with perfume. The golden Glow Balm (€21.90) adds a little radiance, and the Fragrance Sticks (€43.90) bring that gorgeous autumnal warmth into the home. The collection also reflects Rituals’ wider commitment to charitable causes through its 10% Profit Pledge.

Seven scents, one gorgeous gift

And finally, a little Irish luxury from La Bougie.

The Prelude Fragrance Collection brings together seven signature fragrances in smaller sizes, beautifully presented in a gift box and available at Brown Thomas and online. I have never subscribed to the idea of wearing just one perfume for life. Fragrance is far too much fun for that! Some days I want something clean and understated; other days, give me something with serious personality. A discovery collection is the perfect excuse to experiment, and this one would make a gorgeous gift.

October, you’re smelling rather fabulous. And frankly, so should we!
