Have your say on speed in the county

The people of Cork county are invited to have their say on new speed limit bye-laws for 2022 from tomorrow.

The new speed limits will come into law on 1 September 2022 following a 17-step process of consultation and administration.

The review of speed limits comes around every four years with the last one taking place in Cork county in 2017.

Tomorrow, Friday, Cork County Council will publish an invitation for submission from the general public.

Submissions for this stage of the process will be open until 19 July after which they will be collated and brought before their respective municipal committees in September.

Once a decision is made on what submissions will be included, Cork County Council will publish the new draft bye-laws in October/November for further public consultation.

A second draft will then be sent to adjoining local authorities and the gardaí for comment.

On 1 December, the draft bye-laws will be published for viewing in the County Council’s area offices and on its websites inviting submissions for the month of December from the general public to be considered in January.

The final meeting will take place in May 2022 with a view to adopting the new speed limits for September.

Delivering the programme for review to elected members of Cork County Council was Director of Service, Roads and Transport Pádraig Barrett who said his department have been recording all submissions from the public and elected members since 2018.

He added that people should feel free to make their submissions again in the coming month, even if they have already over the past four years.

Welcoming the review was Carrigaline Cllr Seamus McGrath (FF) who said speed remains a significant issue on Cork roads and urged his fellow elected members to be as pro-active as possible in getting public engagement on the review.

Macroom Cllr Gobnait Moynihan (FF) added that submissions should be made available online and promoted through social media.
