Siobhán’s ‘legacy runs deep’
Cork is mourning the loss of a true people’s hero this week following the death of inspirational gay rights and equality campaigner Siobhán O’Dowd.
A key figure in numerous community development campaigns in Cork over the past 30 years, Ms O’Dowd was laid to rest on Tuesday following a celebration of her life at the Glucksman Gallery, UCC.
She died last Saturday which was International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia, an initiative for which she played a central role in bringing to Cork.
She was the long-time co-ordinator of Ballyphehane Togher Community Development Project (BTCDP) and was a member of the Cork City LGBT+ InterAgency Group since 2002, serving as chairperson in 2017.
Just days before her death, the Lord Mayor of Cork Cllr Dan Boyle recognised her long-term contributions on community development, inclusion, lifelong learning, and LGBTI+ activism in Cork.
In a post on social media, the Lord Mayor said: “Siobhán passing is a tremendous loss to Cork, as it is especially for her family and loved ones. It was a privilege for me to acknowledge her achievements through nominating her for a civic award.”
In 1999, Ms O’Dowd co-founded the LINC lesbian and bisexual community centre in Cork city. Kate Moynihan of LINC described her dear friend and colleague as a passionate advocate, a community builder, and a tireless campaigner for justice and equality.
“She played an extraordinary role in shaping a more inclusive and caring society. Her legacy runs deep through the communities she served and loved.
“Siobhán’s warmth, strength, and unwavering belief in the power of community were evident in all she did. We are heartbroken at her loss, and she will be missed beyond words. Our thoughts are with all who knew and loved Siobhán, especially her beloved partner Tina, and her family in both blood and friendship.”
On social media, Sinn Féin TD for Cork South Central, Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire wrote: “Deeply saddened to hear of the death of Siobhán O’Dowd.
“Activist nearly seems too small a word to capture her. She touched the lives of countless people in Cork. My sincere condolences to her partner Tina, her family, all at @btcdp, and to her friends.”
Togher Community Garden posted: “It is with great sadness we learn of the passing of Siobhan O’Dowd, Coordinator of BTCDP. What a legacy of equality and inclusion she has left in Cork. Our condolences to Siobhan's partner and family and friends and to all her colleagues at BTCDP. May she rest in peace.”
She leaves behind her partner Tina, mum Kathleen, sister Martina, brothers Gearóid and Niall, sisters-in-law, a brother-in-law, nieces, nephews, and her wide circle of friends and fellow-activists locally and internationally.
