Older people to meet emergency personnel at upcoming event
A unique event inviting Cork’s older population and their families to come and chat with emergency service personnel will take place in Mallow this month.
The event, named Safe and Connected, will provide an opportunity to speak to local gardaí, fire service, and ambulance personnel in a non-emergency situation.
It will be held at the Hibernian Hotel, Mallow, on 17 July from 10am to 1pm.
There will be talks from members of An Garda Síochána, the National Ambulance Service, and the Cork County Fire Service, as well as the Healthy Age Friendly Homes programme and AIB.
Encouraging Cork’s older people, their carers and families to attend the event is newly elected Mayor of the County of Cork Cllr Mary Linehan Foley.
The mayor said: “This wonderful event stemmed from discussions with Cork County Council’s Older People’s Council,” she said.
“They identified a desire among older people for closer engagement with their local emergency services, particularly the gardaí.”
She continued: “Older people and their carers will be able to ask questions, receive information, and get to know the emergency services.
“We all want people to feel safe in their homes and to continue living in the community as long as they wish,” the mayor concluded.
Throughout the event there will be information stands run by each of the agencies in attendance.
Attendees will also have an opportunity to learn more about the Healthy Age Friendly Homes programme and how they can stay living in their homes for longer.
Refreshments will be provided throughout.
The project is supported by the Cork County Council’s Age Friendly Programme.
