Cork sets the pace for more walking

Cork is stepping forward again with the next phase of the Get Cork Walking Action Plan, aiming to get more people walking for health, travel and recreation.

A wide group of local stakeholders – including experts in health, sport, transport, education, and business – met recently at the Old Waterworks Experience on Lee Road to shape the updated plan for 2025.

This new plan builds on the strong progress made in previous years.

The goal is simple: create more chances for people of all ages and abilities to walk every day, in safe and enjoyable spaces.

The plan will be guided by the Global Action Plan for Physical Activity, which focuses on active communities, supportive environments, and better systems to make walking part of daily life.

The group identified key areas for action, such as public events, walking programmes, local campaigns, and research to track progress. All actions will be designed to be achievable, measurable and long-lasting.

Cork is now seen as a leader in this space, with counties like Limerick, Laois and Waterford following its example by developing their own local walking plans.

One of the highlights of the year will be Cork Walking Week, taking place from 22-28 September, alongside European Mobility Week.

These events aim to show how walking is not just good for your health, but also for the environment and community life.
