On Monday evening, the Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr Fergal Dennehy, hosted a special Mayoral Reception at City Hall. The event welcomed Celtic FC and Cork City FC ahead of the highly anticipated Cork Super Cup.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers attended with his squad. Cork City FC manager Gerard Nash and players from the Cork City team also took part. Representatives of Cork GAA were present to mark the occasion.

The Cork Super Cup was expected to bring a strong boost to local business. The event aimed to generate millions for the local economy.

The Lord Mayor greeted the teams and supporters. He said: “I was honoured to welcome Brendan and his team, the reigning Scottish Premiership Champions, to Cork City Hall ahead of the Super Cup game against our very own Cork City. I also extended my welcome to one of our very own sons of Cork and former College Corinthians player, Adam Idah. This was an incredible sporting event to host in our city, and I wish to thank the organisers and supporters who made this game possible.”

The match took place at SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh. The Cork Super Cup is a joint venture between Cork GAA and Druid Sport Agency and is only the fourth ever soccer match to be staged at the historic grounds, and the first competitive men’s game.

The winning team, Celtic, received a specially commissioned Cork Super Cup trophy, designed by Cork GAA legend Ger McCarthy.

Pat Horgan, Chairman of the Cork County Board, also spoke at the reception. He said: “It was a great privilege to welcome Celtic and Cork City to SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh for this must-see evening of soccer.”

The event marked a memorable moment in Cork’s sporting calendar.
