West Cork to walk for Gaza
A procession of folks from all walks of life will march the length of Gaza, from Bantry to the Mizen Head in Cork, in an expression of solidarity with the people of Palestine next month.
The walk will start in Bantry at 6am on 9 August, passing through Durrus, Ballyrisode, and Goleen before arriving at Mizen Head at 6pm.
Horses, carts, donkeys, goats, baby buggies, tractors, dogs, mechanics, shop workers, runners, musicians, pub-owners, bicyclists, blow-ins, farmers, photographers, and retired gardaí are all expected to make an appearance at the walk.
A GoFundMe page, ‘West Cork Walk 4 Gaza’, has been set up as part of the campaign to raise funds for medical aid for Palestinians. So far, the page has raised close to a quarter of its overall target of €4.5k.
An organiser said: “We want this to be more than an expression of solidarity with the people of Palestine, and more than just another fundraiser.
“We want to do more than just raise awareness, and we want it to be more than a memorial for the victims of injustice - we want this to be a heartfelt and a colourful expression of who we are.
“We remember our own tragic history under centuries of oppressive colonialism - the eviction and displacement, hunger and forced starvation. The landscape around us still bears the scars of that past,” they added.
All are welcome to join the walk at any stage along the way and are encouraged to wear Irish and Palestinian colours.
Meanwhile, Irish charity Trócaire has confirmed that the evacuation of its partner Caritas Jerusalem's medical point in Deir al-Balah, Gaza, has been completed with all medical staff safe and accounted for.
The precautionary measure was taken following an Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) evacuation order for the area.
The Caritas medical point served as a crucial hub for southern Gaza from May 2024 until July 2025, providing life-saving care and essential health services under extremely challenging circumstances.
Trócaire has confirmed that other Caritas medical points across Gaza remain fully operational, and they continue to provide essential health, mental health, and humanitarian services whenever access allows.
