York Hill closed to through traffic

Cars are longer be able to drive straight through between Wellington Road and Summerhill North.

From Monday 18 August Cork City Council has introduced new traffic rules on York Hill.

The change is designed to tackle daily traffic chaos in one of Cork’s busiest school hubs. York Hill, a narrow two-way street, has long been used as a shortcut. But drivers repeatedly ignored the no right turn at the bottom of the hill, creating bottlenecks on Summerhill North and delaying bus services.

Councillors approved the plan in May, bringing forward a BusConnects Cork proposal for filtered permeability on the route. Bollards are now in place to block through traffic while keeping two-way access for pedestrians and cyclists.

Residents of York Terrace can still access their homes by car via Summerhill North. For everyone else, the shortcut is gone, replaced with a safer and calmer street.
