Let's clean our coast

Some 50 groups and more than 900 volunteers in Cork are set to join Clean Coasts for the Big Beach Clean later this month.

With the deadline for registering fast approaching, this is a final reminder to volunteers to sign up before 7 September to avail of free a clean-up kit (while stocks last) and make a positive impact on the Irish coast and waterways. The clean up will take place from 19-21 September.

An estimated 38 tonnes of litter was removed by volunteers in County Cork during the 2024 Big Beach Clean. This year, Clean Coasts aims to build on that success by encouraging volunteers to take part in clean-ups and contribute to citizen science through updated Marine Litter Data Cards, highlighting common waste items found on Irish shores based on feedback given by previous Big Beach Cleaners.

Supported by Kia Ireland, the Big Beach Clean is an annual call-to-action as part of the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC), a global initiative led by Ocean Conservancy to mark the end of the bathing season. This nationwide event invites individuals, families, and communities to come together, clean their local coastline or waterways, and contribute to a global citizen science effort.
