An opportunity for craft makers

A new bursary has been launched to provide artists, craft makers and product designers with the opportunity to work, reflect and consider their practice in all of its creative and commercial aspects.

The Dearcán Bursary, from Cork County Council Arts Office and Cork County Local Enterprise Offices, in association with Benchspace Cork, is a year-long supported programme that provides the successful candidate with a studio space, free access to Benchspace’s extensive facilities, and a €10,000 expenses stipend. Additional benefits at Benchspace include access to a community of artists and craftspeople, events like makers markets, and creative development opportunities such as talks and masterclasses.

Previous award winners include Sara Leslie, Paul McKenna and Chris Tuohy. This year the Dearcán Bursary is targeted towards makers in jewellery and fine metalwork.

Mayor of the County of Cork Cllr Mary Linehan Foley said: “This bursary award demonstrates Cork County Council’s continued support for and engagement with the creative industries in Cork county. Cork County is home to many artists, makers, craftspeople and others working in the creative industries. Their work enriches our lives. It is important that we continue to nurture new talent and to assist makers in reaching their fullest potential. The Dearcán Bursary provides an excellent supportive space that allows emerging talent to develop and flourish.”

Applications for the 2025 Bursary close at 5pm Friday 24 October.
