New woodland trail opens in Ballymartle
Newly developed trails at Ballymartle Woods were officially launched last Sunday with a special treasure hunt for families.
Riverstick Walkway Group hosted the event which comes three years after the group began campaigning to save part of the woods, which had been put up for sale by Coillte, who own the amenity.
A section of the woods had gone sale agreed in January 2022 but locals organised a successful campaign to preserve and improve Ballymartle Woods and walkways as a vital public amenity.
The event was attended by families, nature lovers, and local supporters, who explored the woodland and took part in a treasure hunt organised with the Kinsale Cub Scouts.
Councillor Marie O’Sullivan, deputising for the Lord Mayor of County Cork, officiated the opening and commended the community’s dedication to enhancing and preserving this natural amenity. She highlighted the importance of accessible green spaces and the power of local collaboration.
The event marked a major milestone for the Riverstick Walkway Committee, which has worked since 2022 to protect and promote Ballymartle Woods.
During the celebration, the group called on Cork County Council to partner on further improvements to the amenity, including:
Enhanced path access from Riverstick village along the R600 road
Upgraded parking facilities
Safe restoration of the heritage bridge over the River Stick.
The trail development was made possible through support from the Department of Rural and Community Development, Coillte and Cork County Council. Generous sponsorship was provided by Thermo Fisher, Lilly, Centra Riverstick, Heart Angel, Adams Donnelly Solicitors and Moog, among others.
Sunday brought bright skies and crisp autumn air, ideal conditions for the celebration. Attendees enjoyed a guided walk along the new trails, discovering clues and surprises along the way.
The Riverstick Walkway Committee encourages the public to continue enjoying Ballymartle Woods and all it has to offer.
