Eoin Colfer with ‘Global’.

County library goes ‘Global’

Now in its fifth year, One County, One Book is as part of Cork County Council Library’s community outreach programme to young people and is supported by Creative Ireland.

This year, the library has chosen ‘Global’ by authors Eoin Colfer and Andrew Donkin as the chosen title for this year’s One County, One Book initiative.

Eoin Colfer is the author of the best-selling Artemis Fowl series. He also wrote the critically acclaimed WARP trilogy, and many other novels, chapter books, and picture books for young readers. Eoin was the third Laureate na n-Óg, Ireland’s laureate for children’s literature, from 2014 to 2016.

Andrew Donkin is the author of over eighty books and graphic novels for children and adults. His books have been translated into thirty languages around the world and have sold over ten million copies in the last decade.

Together, with illustrator Giovanni Rigano, they co-wrote the graphic novel ‘Illegal’, which tells the story about a young boy displaced from his home and his journey to find solace as a refugee in modern times. ‘Global’ is this team’s follow up to ‘Illegal’, focusing once again on a crucial topic and crisis being faced by humanity today, climate change. It is an amazing work on an eye-opening theme advocating for conservation of nature and saving the planet as well as being a book for all ages.

Mayor of the County of Cork Cllr Mary Linehan Foley said: “This year’s One County, One Book delivers a powerful message about hope and survival in the face of environmental crisis. It is a timely message delivered in a very accessible format.”

In celebration of the book, secondary school and youth reach students are invited to meet the authors and discuss the graphic novel in Carrigaline Library on Tuesday 25 November at 11.30am or in Clonakilty Library on Wednesday 26 November at 11am.
