Czech this out

“They say that Irish and Czechs share a similar sense of humour. This new direct flight allows us to be again a bit closer to each other. Let’s write our new stories.”

Those were the words of Ambassador of Czech Republic to Ireland, H.E. Pavel Vošalík as Aer Lingus’ new service from Cork to Prague took off for the first time last week.

The Aer Lingus EI832 flight departed with a full complement of passengers, bound for Václav Havel Airport Prague. To mark the occasion, a special celebration was held at the boarding gate where passengers travelling on the first flight were treated to fidorka – a traditional Czech chocolate wafer snack.

Prague, known as the ‘City of a Hundred Spires,’ is one of Europe’s most idyllic destinations. Visitors can stroll across the historic Charles Bridge, explore the vast grounds of Prague Castle, and marvel at the workings of the 15th century Astronomical Clock in the Old Town Square.

During winter months, the city transforms into a festive wonderland, with Christmas markets in Wenceslas Square and the Old Town selling traditional Czech crafts, mulled wine and seasonal treats. Prague is well known for its culture and is home to world-class opera houses such as the National Theatre, the Rudolfinum and the State Opera, along with many renowned ballet venues. With flights operating every Thursday and Sunday, the new Aer Lingus service is timed for long weekend getaways between now and March 2026.

Ambassador H.E. Pavel Vošalík, who was in Cork Airport for the inaugural flight, added: “Let’s enjoy the various cultural and leisure activities both countries offer and make new friendships: from Czech music festival Colours of Ostrava to walks in beautiful Irish countryside, from Cork Film Festival to film festival in Karlovy Vary, from picturesque streets of Cork to medieval historical sites of Prague, from Guinness to Pilsner Urquell. Thank you, Aer Lingus.”

Also present in Cork, Director of CzechTourism UK & Ireland, Katarína Hobbs said: “This new direct flight from Cork to Prague is so convenient and a fantastic opportunity for Irish holidaymakers. They can now easily explore Prague's beautiful capital, rich history, stunning architecture, and vibrant culture. But the adventure doesn't have to end in Prague! The city offers excellent transport links, making it easy for our Irish friends to venture beyond the usual tourist spots and discover hidden gems across the country. We're looking forward to seeing many new visitors from Ireland and they’ll be sure to receive a warm welcome!”

The Prague route is the first of two new Aer Lingus routes from Cork Airport this winter, with a new weekly service to Geneva commencing on 20 December.

Susanne Carberry, Chief Customer Officer at Aer Lingus, said: “Aer Lingus’ new route from Cork to Prague opens the door to one of Europe’s most enchanting winter destinations for our customers across Cork and Munster. Prague is renowned for its breathtaking architecture, vibrant culture, and magical festive atmosphere - especially during the winter months. We’re thrilled to see such strong demand for this new service from the outset. And with our new Cork to Geneva route launching in December, customers can also look forward to easy access to Alpine adventures and a wealth of winter sports.”

Head of Aviation Business Development and Communications at Cork Airport, Tara Finn said: “Prague is a truly magical city, especially in the wintertime and we’re delighted to have worked with Aer Lingus to establish this new service, connecting another European capital city. The new twice-weekly service is a fantastic option for weekend city breaks and we’re confident it will be a huge hit with our customers across Munster and south Leinster.”
